How to apply perfectly straight lines for line marking preparation by using a StraightLine 1000 Applicator. Set out the area to be masked using a chalk line, ideally offset from the required edge to increase tape adhesion.
1. Getting Started
After setting out the area to be masked using a chalk line, ideally offset from the required edge to increase tape adhesion. Adjust the lever width of the StraightLine by moving the levers at the front of the machine to increase or decrease the width of the line. Make sure they are equal on both sides to have the lines central.
2. Adjust The Offset Pointer
The offset pointer is your line of sight, it gives you a visual cue to where the line will be laid. By ensuring the offset pointer is correctly adjusted your lines will be more accurate. The pointer is easily adjusted through a thumb screw which can be hand tightened.
3. How To Put Tape Onto The Applicator
The StraightLine applicator, has 6 slots where tape spools can be held, 3 on each side.
The rolls of tape can be pushed onto the spool holders (three prongs) on both sides of the machine. When putting the tape on the applicator it’s a good idea to bear in mind that tape quantities should be the same on the opposite sides so they don’t run out at different times.
4. Setting The Tape In Position
When you are in position and ready to mark out the lines, pull a length of tape over the spurs (the metal bars above the front wheels). Then place the tape on the floor in front of the front wheels.
Begin by using tape from the top, front rolls on both sides of the machine. Pull the end of the tape forward over the tape guide at the front of the machine and stick 50-75mm of tape securely to the floor directly in front of the wheel. Then, repeat this procedure on the other side of the machine.
Whenever possible, start taping one metre before the actual starting point of your designated line to ensure correct alignment and exact placement of the tape.
5. Applying Tape Using The Applicator
Once the tape is set up, push forwards and adjust alignment accordingly. Push forwards at a constant speed to apply.
Grasp the handle, using both hands for maximum control, and push the machine forward. Keep the pointer directly over the chalk line to ensure the tape is placed accurately.
After completing one to two metres of taping (and periodically throughout the project) stop and check the width and positioning of the tape, making any minor adjustments if necessary. This will minimise lost time if any corrections need to be made.
6. Replacing Tape
When the roll of tape runs out, pull a length of the next roll and stick it on top and cut off the told tape. This process can be repeated across the three tape spools.

7. Reducing Over Passes
The StraightLine Applicator can also be setup to apply up to three layers of tape in one pass. This can be done as a way of building up a protective layer for shot blasting. For masking out an area for line marking one tape thickness is sufficient.
