A new bill has been announced declaring all motorway service car parks and larger fuel stations should provide electric vehicle charging points. This was announced during the Queens speech back in June, where it emerged that a plan is being put in place to ensure the UK continues to be at the forefront of developing new technology – specifically in electric and automated road vehicles.
Automated Electric Vehicles Bill
Called the Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill, this piece of legislation paves the way for a much more comprehensive and usable EV charging network. As of now, many service stations do not provide electric vehicle charging, leading to 90% of EV charging being carried out at home.
The fear of running out of charge is said to be the main reason as to why many motorists would not buy an electric vehicle, according to a recent poll conducted by the AA. The same poll also stated that one-third of motorists would consider buying an EV, however, this could rise after the new law is put in place.
Despite this, electric vehicle registrations are increasing, with Sky News reporting 13,800 EV’s being registered in the first quarter of 2017, a 17% rise on the same period the year before.
The bill also extends compulsory motor vehicle insurance to cover the use of automated vehicles, in order to ensure compensation claims continue to be paid quickly, fairly and easily, in line with longstanding insurance practice, and therefore improve the roads’ safety.
