PORTSMOUTH COUNCIL LAKESIDE CAR PARK

Portsmouth Council, Lakeside Office Park, Northarbour, PO6 3EZ

Applied on 7th May 2020

The Need:

Lakeside Office Park was acquired by Portsmouth City Council in August 2019. The asset was originally developed in 1976 and the carparking and roadway areas included significant volumes of concrete, which have since been overlaid using asphalt systems. Where vertical joints had not been created in the asphalt, the movement of the old concrete slabs has resulted in surface failures in the asphalt. A full resurfacing programme would be ideal, but wasn’t in the two-year maintenance budget, so an alternative solution was needed.

Solution:

There was clearly movement in the substrate, which caused the asphalt to fail so any repair solution needed to be flexible. The PermaFyx L271 is a durable MMA system that has flexible properties which satisfies this criteria. The deeper sections were filled with a bulked out formulation of 2-6mm and then the area was screeded at a thickness of approximately 3mm to give a full bond across the movement joints. Using the PermaFyx L271 system also ensured a good SRV could be maintained.

Summary:

The client reported the repair looked extremely neat and noted on the absence of any hot works to make the repair. The fact that this was a cost-effective system that could be applied using on-site maintenance crews, without needing to invest in large specialist equipment, meant the solution satisfied the criteria set out by the client.

System Used

PermaFyx L271 MMA Surface Repair with 2-6mm aggregate. Overcoated with a surface layer of base resin, which has 1.4-2.5mm aggregate.
