West Street, Reading Town Centre

Situation

West Street is a busy bus route in the heart of Reading Town Centre, Berkshire. Reading Borough Council have experienced an ongoing challenge with failing ironwork installations and were looking for a solution that would offer both a performance guarantee without extended traffic management deployment being required. Their leadership team visited the Meon Experience Centre in Portsmouth to learn about the systems options available within the Magma range of solutions.

Solution

Having seen the examples on view, the team selected the Magma permanent ironworks reinstatement system to resolve their issues, being impressed with rigidity and ease of installation. They quickly identified a site to use for a trial. The site involved the reinstatement of a 600 x 600 x150mm access chamber cover in the wheel tracks of a bus route. The solution was chosen because it could be installed without any hot-works and all materials and equipment could be transported to site within one vehicle.

Summary

The installation was completed within a 3 hour time frame which included removal of the existing cover and preparation for the new frame. The site could be open to traffic within 3 hours of the initial mortar placement. A senior highways engineer supervising the install confirmed he was impressed with the speed of installation, ease of material preparation and the final visual appearance.
