MMA COLD PLASTIC SURFACE MARKINGS EXPLAINED

ABOUT MMA COLD PLASTIC MARKINGS

MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) Cold Plastic is a 2-component surface marking system. It is an extremely durable system, mainly used in high-stress traffic areas.

MMA Cold Plastics have been successfully used and performed throughout Europe for many years in varied climates. While the initial cost for MMA may be higher than conventional marking materials used in the UK, MMA Cold Plastic will increase service life, save you money, reduce disruption over time and is kinder to the environment.

TYPICAL AREAS OF USE

MMA Cold Plastics are mainly applied and used in high stress locations like roundabouts, junctions, and roads that receive heavy traffic. MMA is used widely across the UK by councils and contractors for completing box hatchings, informative highway markings and lines. Cold Plastics like Meon’s UltraLine are also used to create transverse lines, parkings bays, zebra crossings, cycle routes and is perfect for high friction areas prone to wearing out.

HIGHWAYS

MMA Cold Plastic is the perfect solution for high traffic areas like junctions, slip roads and areas with informative markings. It is extremely durable, fast curing and easily applied.

CYCLE ROUTES

Cycle routes receive a lot of traffic and need to offer a consistent level of high slip resistance. MMA coatings are ideal as they are extremely durable, UV stable and maintain a great appearance.

CARPARKS

The majority of markings in carparks could use single pack cold plastic paints to speed up the project. MMA materials can be used for transverse lines, junctions and markings receiving heavy constant use.

URBAN ROADS

MMA markings are perfect for high volume / stress areas. Cold Plastic removes the disruption of road works by lasting 3 times longer than traditional methods, and retains great colour and UV stability.

TYPES OF MMA APPLICATIONS

MMA Cold Plastic is available in a range of formats, designed for different effects and application methods. Different appications bring different performace results. Durability is dependant on the thickness of the applied material. See application methods below below for further details.

HAND MOULD APPLICATION:

Hand mould application is one of the most straight forward MMA Cold Plastic applications. You simply add peroxide to an MMA base resin. Meon’s UltraLine comes in various colours and the correct ratio of peroxide is provided with the kit. Mix the peroxide and the resin for 2 minutes and then extrude out with the hand mould. Apply up to 2mm thickness to give optimum durability. For reflectivity, scatter the UltraLine with highway grade reflective glass beads. To get a great finish choose the correct size hand mould and / or back roll with an ordinary roller to get a perfectly distributed finish.

SQUEEGEE AND ROLLER APPLICATION:

This is also a straight forward hand application of cold plastic MMA. This application is suited more for area coatings. A product like UltraGrip Surface Coating is ideal for this and can be applied to many substrates like concrete, asphalt and steel. UltraGrip is easily mixed, poured and squeegeed out, then back rolled for texture. Watch the video HERE:

SPRAYABLE APPLICATION:

Spraying MMA Cold Plastic speeds up the application process with a consistent finsh and minimises waste. Spray application methods vary and can be carried out depending on your budget, typical project size, or equipment you already have that could be utilised. See below…

98:2 APPLICATION

This particular spray application is very common on highways projects. 98% of the material is an MMA paint/resin which mixes in the hoses at point of application with 2% peroxide.  Depending on the conditions and product used, this should cure within 10-20 minutes.

1:1 APPLICATION

This application of MMA is simple although specialist equipment is required. The LineLazer 200hs 1:1 MMA spray machine is required for this application method.

REACTIVE BEADS & SPRAY

The most simple spray application method. This application uses a LineLazer 200HS reflective series spray machine with pressurized bead dispenser. Sprayable MMA like Meon’s UltraStripe is used with peroxide coated beads which set the paint.  This method offers a very straight forward application with no risk of mixed MMA product curing in the machine.

AGGLOMERATE:

Agglomerate line markings have to be professionally machine applied. This is a highly durable marking that offers excellent skid resistance and wet night visibility. This product is extruded over a spinning spoked roller creating a splatter effect. Other forms and methods are available. Mainly used on highways for centre and side lines.
