Serfis Tackles Two Stations' Surface Defect Repairs in One Night
The Problem
Serfis Construction and Engineering Ltd's client faced two urgent surface defect challenges, requiring repairs at separate station locations within a tight timeframe. The first issue was on a height restricted multi storey car park ramp, where the surface course was deteriorating.
Using traditional approaches would have required breaking out the area below, increasing project time, exposing the team to hand arm vibration syndrome, and creating logistical difficulties within the short working window.
The second issue was a failing manhole in a busy station drop off point, which needed immediate repair to ensure safety and minimise disruption to traffic, especially during peak hours.

The Solution
Meon recommended tailored, permanent solutions for each problem. For the car park ramp, PermaFyx, a permanent methyl methacrylate (MMA) surface repair, was recomended. This product was chosen because it offers high skid resistance, meeting the specified requirements for the area, and cures in less than an hour, allowing for rapid reopening.
For the manhole surround repair, PatchMaster H575, a permanent cold lay asphalt, was suggested. This solution enabled Serfis to reset the chamber lid, resurface, and then overbanding with ThermaBand R171 sealing the joint efficiently, reducing costs and simplifying the repair process

The Result
Both repairs were successfully completed in one night, showcasing the effectiveness of the Magma solutions.
The car park ramp was reopened as soon as Serfis closed the site, thanks to the quick curing time of PermaFyx.
The manhole repair was finished ready for normal traffic to resume the following morning, with significant cost savings from eliminating the need for excessive hot ashphalt.
These outcomes not only solved the immediate pain points but also provided durable, long-term fixes with minimal disruption for Serfis's client.

System Utilised

ThermaBand R171 Preformed Thermoplastic HAPAS Overbanding Tape
ThermaBand R171 is a HAPAS approved thermoplastic overbanding tape, which is used to seal joints in asphalt and concrete surfaces, preventing water ingress and associated frost damage.
It has an advanced formulation which retains flexibility in cooler conditions and has an anti-skid aggregate within the material to provide a skid resistance exceeding 60 SRV.
ThermaBand R171 is applied using a simple torch on system which is easy to apply and cools down to re-open to traffic quickly, without the need for boilers and associated hot-work risks.
