OVERBANDING VS INFILL

OVERBANDING VS INFILL

The Winter weather is making road surfaces more brittle and susceptible to damage. One of the first signs of damage in most cases is cracking in the road. This can develop into loose road surfacing, potholes, or even further cracking.

There are ways to repair this earlier on, with the two most popular methods being overbanding and infill. Both of these roughly achieve the same goal, however, they do so in two different ways.

OverBanding

Overbanding is applied as a layer of thermoplastic material that is laid over the top of cracks, joins, and damage. It is then often heated up so that it ‘melts’ onto the surface, therefore securing a bond. Aggregate can come already within the overbanding tape to increase Slip Resistance Value (SRV).

ThermaBand Plus

By laying an overbanding material over any cracks, water is unable to penetrate the road surface, causing it to remain strong under heavy traffic. This prevents any further damage to the roads caused by water ingress. Overbanding is not as long lasting as infill, but is quick and simple to apply, and can be very effective.

Infill

Crack infill works by ‘filling in’ any cracks in the road, preventing water ingress. It is often applied using a hand mould and is ‘dragged’ along the crack, allowing the solution to fall into it – therefore filling it. Similarly to overbanding, aggregate can be applied to crack infill to improve its Slip Resistance Value (SRV).

UltraCrack

As with most MMA products, crack infill is very fast-curing, which makes it ideal to live traffic situations where road closure time needs to be kept to a minimum. Unlike Overbanding, Infill requires no hot works or specialised equipment, making it quicker to lay.
